Mariana da Conceição Faria Rodrigues - Master’s degree in EN in 2012 - 2013
I currently work in statistical research and more specifically in the area of health. I was already working in this area when I decided to enrol in the Masters Degree in Mathematics, as one of my objectives was to invest in training related to this area. I can safely say that my education has vastly contributed towards me facing current professional challenges in a confident manner.
2. Which aspects of your academic training were relevant to your profession?
The choice to follow my studies in Mathematics came about due to the need to further my scientific knowledge and, consequently, improve my career. This Masters provided me with vast knowledge in areas such as multivariate data analysis, survival analysis and in using Programe R, a very useful tool for the application of statistics mainly in the area of health, which I am linked to professionally. The Masters Degree in Mathematics at the University of Madeira covered several essential topics related to statistics. An integral part of that training was useful for what would eventually be my thesis, survival analysis of people with cancer of the digestive system. The knowledge I learnt throughout my Masters Degree in Mathematics was susbtantial and only possible due to the professionalism of the teaching staff who continuously strived to raise the quality parametres of the course.
3. Who would you recommend your course to?
I recommend this course to people who like Mathematics as a scientific area in research and need to strengthen and consolidate the knowledge they acquired in their undergraduate degree in Mathematics.
4. Why the University of Madeira?
This University is recognized for the quality of its teaching and the growing demand in keeping up with other international institutions of the same type. I would also like to emphasize the location factor which allows us to remain close to home. In that sense, and for being the only University in Madeira and having a course in this area, I recommend it as an option.
