Institutional Activity
The University of Madeira develops a significant service provision activity for the community, placing its scientific, technical and pedagogical knowledge at the service of society. This dimension is one of the pillars of its institutional mission, promoting knowledge transfer, innovation, technical capacity-building and specialised support for public, private and third-sector organisations.
Through its schools, research centres and specialised laboratories, UMa provides services in several scientific areas and maintains an active collaboration dynamic with society.

How to start a service provision
Creating service provision projects at the University of Madeira follows an institutional procedure that ensures scientific framing, financial viability and compliance with the applicable regulations.
Project proposal
Presentation of a service provision proposal, including the project description, objectives, activities to be developed and identification of the organisations involved.
Unit and resource definition
For ongoing projects, a service provision unit with scientific autonomy may be created. The proposal must identify the human resources involved, their allocation to the project and the necessary institutional resources.
Feasibility analysis
Assessment of the project's financial viability, including an indicative budget, estimated income and expenses, as well as any protocols or contracts to be signed with external organisations.
Institutional approval
The creation of the unit and the appointment of the responsible person are submitted for approval by the Rector and may involve an opinion from the Academic Committee of the Senate.
Formalisation
The head of the unit is appointed by the Rector and signs a commitment statement, assuming the management of the unit and compliance with the applicable legal and institutional standards.

Event Organisation Support
The University of Madeira makes its facilities available for scientific, academic, cultural and institutional events, ensuring different levels of logistical and administrative support according to the needs of the promoting organisations.

Issuing validated certificates.
These services can be delivered in an integrated way, covering all of the components mentioned above, or partially, ensuring only one of the dimensions (for example, venue allocation only, registration management only, or, more occasionally, certificate issuing only).
In 2024, UMa supported events such as I Symposium on Archipelagic Studies, the conference Discourses in Interaction III, the 6th Good Connections Conference and the 5th Crosscurrents Conference, among others.
