Marisela Gonçalves da Silva - Undergraduate degree in EN in 2009/2010

1. What has been your career path after completing the course?

After completing my undergraduate degree, I began working as a Pre-School and Primary School computer science teacher at the Colégio Externato Lisbonense; Following this, I worked for the Marina do Funchal as a Recepcionist/Pre-Invoicing, welcoming clientes of the Company and performing other duties related to the category; I was a telephone operator for the Firefighter Services in Madeira. My duties were carried out at the Call Center with the objective of directing all telephone calls and scheduling transport for patients in need of non-urgent healthcare. I also carried out these duties at SESARAM, E.P.E. I currently work for the same institution, in the area of Statistics. My work is carried out in the Strategic Planning and Management/Statistic Control office and my duties of senior technician involve the mathematical/statistical treatment of large quantities of information within the scope of the region's Hospital and Health Centre Production. All of this allows for the control of figures that define the management of hospitals and health centres in the entire Autonomous Region of Madeira.

2. Which aspects of your academic training were relevant to your profession?

The degree in Mathematics improved my knowledge, broadened my horizons and provided the necessary tools to perform my current duties. It also prepared me as a human being and to embrace life's challenges.

3. Who would you recommend your course to?

In first place, to all those who like Mathematics. In second place to all those who enjoy a challenge. Anything is possible with will and determination, even through all of the difficulties which one may face. All you have to do is believe!

4. Why the University of Madeira?

It is where great teachers help acquire knowledge in the vast array of subjects which compose the undergraduate degree in Mathematics. The non-teaching staff who help with the daily functioning of the University and the friendship of colleagues, to whom I would like to express, without exception, my esteem and gratitude!
