Overall objectives:

Understanding the evolution of waste management and the importance of proper management in the current landscape.  Knowing the main types of waste and their classification, through the interpretation of related legislation and policies. Understanding the principles of integrated waste management. Recognizing collection, transport and environmental monitoring systems. Understanding the nature of agricultural waste and assessing the associated environmental impact and identifying appropriate reduction, treatment and recovery practices.

Syllabus:

Historical evolution of waste management.

Waste classification.

Integrated waste management.

Community and national legislation and policy.

Waste production and composition.

Prevention, reduction, and reuse.

Waste collection and transport systems.

Separation, processing, recovery, and treatment of waste.

Recycling (streams, flows, organic recycling, aerobic composting, anaerobic composting, and vermicomposting).

Energy recovery.

Biological and chemical conversion technologies.

Environmental control systems.

Agricultural waste (green manure, composting, pesticide residues, standards for minimizing production and for the correct disposal of pesticide residues, fertilizer residues, environmental impact produced by livestock waste, problems of livestock waste).

Practical cases on the reuse of organic waste.

Assesssment methods and criteria:

Theoretical and practical classes will account for 40% of the total grade. Laboratory practice classes will account for 25% of the student's final grade, which will be assessed through an individual presentation on a practical class. Fieldwork classes will account for 25% of the student's final grade, requiring the individual submission of one assignment on a given topic. Attendance, punctuality, and class participation will account for 10% of the final grade.
