Doctorate Degree in Biological Sciences

The cycle of studies prepares towards obtaining a Doctorate in Biological Sciences comprised of 6 semesters (3 academic years). Those who obtain 180 ECTS are awarded the title.
The main aim of the doctorate programme in Biological Sciences is to contribute towards the creation of highly qualified investments and skills to carry out research projects autonomously whether it is in the university context or in other economic related areas, be it private or public institutions.
This programme is an essential contribution towards the academic and socioeconomic dynamics. One of the main objectives of this cycle of studies is to foster scientific development which may be applied in the local, national or international context.
This cycle of studies seeks to prepare students for research in specific areas of Biology in multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary contexts; for original and independent research on subjects which are shared and validated by the international community and towards the systematization of approaches in research processes and their application in the area.
The degree was recognized by the order of 08-06-2012 of the Secretary of State for Education and School Administration. It is aimed at those who intend to further develop their teaching career in basic education (recruitment group – 230 and 520); 2nd and 3rd cycles and secondary education as foreseen in the terms of article 54 of the Teaching Career Statute.

Career Opportunities and Employability

Graduates of this degree will be able to carry out duties related to fundamental or applied research in any area of Biology; perform other duties related to consultancy, assessment, management, technical and scientific advice as well as studying and applying processes and techniques within the domain of biomedicine, biotechnology, pharmaceutical and industry, amongst others.

Candidates

This degree is aimed at all applicants with a Masters in Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry or related areas. Eligible applicants must have a masters degree or a legal equivalent; hold an undergraduate degree or a relevant school or scientific curriculum recognized by the members of the Scientific Council.
