Overall objectives:

1 - This CU will teach to propose a coherent, hi-fidelity and technically resolved design solution for a spatial requalification project.
2 - Respond to programming details of a design project and develop a proposal.
3 - Build a human factors and anthropometric knowledge base for spatial design.
4 - Drawing and visualization techniques for presenting projects in architecture and interior design domain areas.
5 - Evaluate suitable building technologies and materials to compliment a concept design.
6 - Factors which influence the spatial quality of an urban structure i.e. lighting, acoustics, volumes, circulation, furniture etc.
7 - Impact of human scale objects on the spatial experience of a manmade space.
8 - Understand the relationship between furniture with lighting and volumetric spaces.
9 - Understand the redevelopment potential an existing space for alternate usage scenarios and patterns (adaptive reuse).

Syllabus:

1 - Case studies of small-scale spaces (retail spaces, hospitality spaces, public use spaces, pop up structures).
2 - Evaluate interior spaces in terms of measurements, structural opportunities, circulation patterns, lighting quality, and materials.
3 - Learn circulation and furniture normative dimensions through case study site visits and measure drawing techniques.
4 - Learn application of furniture, fittings, and products to influence the living experience of a space.
5 - Understand the impact of material, structural design and construction technologies on spatial design proposals.
6 - Communicate Spatial Semantics and character through materials, lighting, and structure design.
7 - Propose a concept project with a layout solution containing structure, circulation, furniture, lighting, materials, and colour considerations.

Evaluation Methodology:
This CU is based on project development requiring extensive fieldwork. The students will learn how designing human scale artifacts can re-characterize an interior space. Field studies will frame the problem setting followed by project work in studio to conceptualize a spatial solution. Evaluation Model 'C' is followed. Components: 1) participation and attendance / presence (continuous evaluation) 10%; 2) Project design- Concept / descriptive memory (10%); 3) Design project- Presentation level 1 (20%); 4) Design project- Presentation level 2 (20%); 5) Design project- Presentation level 3 (20%); 6) Design project- Final delivery (20%). The Examination of Appeal and Improvement will be 30% of the final.
